Three of the eight farm workers detained in Vermont in April have been transferred to a detention facility in Louisiana, according to the organization Migrant Justice.
A spokesperson for the organization, Will Lambek, told NBC5 that four of the detained workers are still being held at Northwest State Correctional Facility. Lambek said one person was transferred to Strafford County Correctional Facility in Dover, New Hampshire, and the rest were transferred to Louisiana.
"They are at imminent risk of deportation," Lambek said. "The legal team in the case is pushing for all eight to be provided with hearings to request release on bond, and in those hearings, arguments will be made about the legality of the arrests."
On April 21, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said agents in Richford responded to a report from a citizen who allegedly saw two people carrying backpacks and exiting a wooded area before crossing into private farmland less than three miles from the U.S.-Canada border.
Agents arrested one of the individuals at the scene and pursued the second. While searching the area, agents located and arrested several other people who were determined to be in the country illegally.
Eight people were detained. NBC5 learned that they were employees at Pleasant Valley Farm in Berkshire. However, farm owner Amanda St. Pierre said the employees were hired "following the federal and state employment requirements."
